Chapter 11: Water and Smoke

Billy woke up just as the clock above the door chimed five o’clock, unease sweeping through him as through a fellow caught redhanded robbing a blind man by the angel Gabriel. It felt as though his intestines were furiously tying themselves in knots, the rest of his body shaking as a result.

Hoping to calm the jitters, Billy got out of bed in search of a glass of water. He put on his slippers, put on a dressing gown and made his way downstairs. It was quite dark, down there, and the creak of the old floorboards echoed through the empty dining area. Billy took several deep breaths and made his way to the kitchens.

Suddenly, he stopped. He had that unnerving feeling a poor chick has when a hawk watches it from a nearby tree. Slowly, he turned around. Sure enough, there was someone standing in the corner across the room.

Before Billy could make a run for it, every candle in the room flicked to life and the person in the corner stepped forward. Billy saw the cat-like eyes before he saw the knee-length boots, the emerald coat and the spiky, silver mohawk.
