Chapter 2:

Flames in the Rain

Billy found it extremely difficult to stay asleep that night. On top of an impending cold, he was plagued by incoherent and highly confusing dreams which involved tall, cloaked strangers and ugly birds that transformed into women with glowing amber eyes. His head was a swimming, jumbled mess of probabilities and unanswered questions. What happened back there? he asked himself again and again.

Billy had failed to find the silver-haired woman once she’d fled the alley. She’d disappeared without trace or sound — as though she’d vanished into thin air. His search of every street and alley in the vicinity eventually proved a waste of time, and grateful for the thinning storm, he’d given up and stumbled home.

He had not bothered to inform his parents of the evening’s incidents. Whenever he found himself in situations of this kind, they always told him, ‘Don’t let it worry you!’ then turned and exchanged worried looks the moment they believed he was not looking. Although he’d never told them so, Billy always found this an irritating response. He’d gone straight to bed instead.
