Chapter 5: Ellsworth

The pub was small and cheerful. A few enchanters sat lunching on the little circular tables.

‘Doctor Longstaff!’ cried the bartender. ‘Such an honour to have a warlock here again. You on a mission?’

Alexia smiled and told him she was.

‘She’s on a mission!’ he cried again. ‘This young man, is he your apprentice, Doctor?’

‘Not quite. We’re actually in a bit of a hurry, Bob. May we quickly place our order, please.’

‘Did you hear that?’ whispered the enchanters on the tables to each other. ‘She’s on a mission!’

By the door, an old enchanter drained his pint, picked up his hat and left the pub. Outside, he told the first person he met that a Steinergard warlock, on a mission, was dining at the Unicorn. This person nudged a friend, who nudged another, and within seconds the entire street was aware of this fact.

‘This tastes really good,’ said Billy after another sip of the mead Alexia had bought them. It was like honey with a faint taste of grape juice.
