Chapter 3:
The Guardian’s Tale
For a moment, Billy was dumbstruck. His mind was swimmimg in a million questions and he had no idea which to ask first. Panic getting the better of him, he gave his head a little shake and stammered, ‘Are you . . . are you gonna run away again?’
‘Not without you, this time, I’m afraid,’ the woman smiled. She turned towards the door and said, ‘Please, do follow me.’
‘Who are you?’
‘Might as well get the introductions out of the way. My name is Alexia Longstaff; I’m from Enchanted Earth.’
‘From — ‘
Billy’s next words were cut off as a tiny sugarbird swooped in through the broken window, landed on Alexia Longstaff’s shoulder and began twittering excitedly in her ear. Eyes wide, she listened very attentively, as though she understood everything the bird was saying. Next moment, she began making high — quite convincing — chirping sounds of her own, and the sugarbird flew back out the window.
‘Our friends just left the planet.’
