Chapter 4: The End of the Tunnel
‘You don’t need clothes.’ Alexia smiled. ‘You’ll find the fashion up in E.E. a bit . . . different.’
Billy tossed his toiletries, underwear and favourite novels (Tolkien, Chinua Achebe, a couple of Christies and Stephen Kings and an old copy of A Wizard of Earthsea) into his satchel. In a few moments, he was ready to leave. Meanwhile, Alexia had left the room to explore the house and the damage therin. Billy could hear her whistling softly in the twins’ room as he made for his door.
‘You’re ready?’ she said when he walked onto the passage. ‘Excellent. On our way, then.’
‘No, wait,’ said Billy, looking back into his room. A part of him almost laughed at the irony of it all: that his family could sleep so peacefully while his world had just been rocked upside-down. ‘We — we can’t leave them like this.’
‘They’ll wake up in a few minutes,’ Alexia said. ‘The Guardian will explain everything to them when he comes over to fix the house.’
Walking on shaky legs, Billy re-entered his room and placed light kisses on all four…
